From Thin to ExtraBold, with italics
Sancy is a typeface collection by Emmanuel Besse designed in 2 versions, a Sans and a Slab. Each variant comes in 14 styles, 7 weights with matching italics. The initial idea of a Sans/Slab combination and the narrow proportions comes from a wooden panel located in the small town of Besse (same name as the designer, adding to this release a personal touch). Sancy Sans is a narrow grotesque with a certain roundness and a homogeneous text colour. Sancy Slab, also with semi-condensed proportions, feels elegant in thinner weights, reliable and friendly in darker styles. Both feature low contrast, as in stretched type from street signs.
Working from a specific source with a limited number of letters, the need was felt to expand to other material, and thus to include two additional reference categories: published typefaces from specimens ranging from the late 19th century to the 1970s, and more recent existing design pieces, both professional and unsigned, that use and modify type. For the Slab, inspiration came from Antique No. 1 by Miller & Richard (1921), Égyptiennes by Peignot & Cie (1923), Ionic No. 150 (American Type Founders, 1897), and various Clarendon Condensed from the same era. The Sans leans towards more diverse sources: early semi-condensed sans-serif (French Antiques from Deberny & Peignot, or grotesques by Miller & Richard) meet ‘90s digital versions of narrowed Helvetica and Arial, as well as stretched names on lightboxes on the façades of the Asian restaurants of Paris.

As the result of a program designed to develop a padding concept to improve crash protection for airplane passengers, Ames Research Center developed what is now called memory foam. Fagerdala World Foams managed to produce a mass-produced version in 1991, creating what they call “TEMPUR Foam”. Memory foam has been incorporated into mattresses, pillows, military and civilian aircraft, automobiles and motorcycles, sports safety equipment, amusement park rides and arenas, horseback saddles, archery targets, furniture, and human and animal prostheses. Its high-energy absorption and soft characteristics offer protection and comfort. TEMPUR Foam was inducted into the Space Foundation Space Technology Hall of Fame in 1998.
