Modale Antique is a sans-serif typeface with sharp ends and a general bonhomie. Initially designed for a contemporary art center visual identity proposal, it was put on hold for a while before returning as a complete family. Its letter construction is influenced by Antiques Maigres Larges by Deberny & Cie (1923) but also takes inspiration from Venus by Bauer Type Foundry (Frankfurt am Main, 1907) and Monotype Grotesque (Monotype, 1926). This mix of a grotesque structure, bold capitals, and clean-cut endings creates a sense of rhythm. Modale Antique is sharp but not overly assertive; it is effective without imposing limits. Its nearly monolinear construction and rounded curves steer clear of the eccentric and uncertain aspects of grotesque models. Modale Antique offers a straightforward yet friendly solution to modern needs: a typeface that is balanced in all caps and text-ready.

Before the introduction of digital production, a series of still images were recorded on a strip of chemically sensitized celluloid (photographic film stock), usually at a rate of 24 frames per second. The images are transmitted through a movie projector at the same rate as they were recorded, with a Geneva drive ensuring that each frame remains still during its short projection time. A rotating shutter causes stroboscopic intervals of darkness, but the viewer does not notice the interruptions due to flicker fusion.

“We loved [‘More Bounce’] in part because it was played at a slower, funkier tempo by far than so many other dance tracks of the period. It was very relaxed and sexy while still maintaining a raw, hard edge.”
